Urinary Calculi in Show Wethers: Why It Happens, How to Prevent It, and What to Do the Night He Cannot Urinate

It is late, and your wether will not settle. He gets up, he stretches out, he strains, and nothing comes. He does it again five minutes later. He is grinding his teeth. Maybe he kicked at his belly. He walked away from the feeder tonight, which he never does.

And the thought you are having, the one nearly every family has first, is that he is constipated.

He is almost certainly not constipated.

I want to say the next part before I explain anything, because if you only read one paragraph of this article it needs to be this one. A wether who is straining and not passing urine is an emergency, and the clock is measured in hours. Not days. Call your veterinarian tonight. Then come back and read the rest, because the rest of this is how you keep from ever standing in that pen again.

What urinary calculi actually is

Urinary calculi, also called urolithiasis, is stones. Minerals come out of solution in the urine, form crystals, and those crystals build into stones somewhere in the urinary tract. The stone itself is not the emergency. The emergency is where it gets stuck.

Females pass them. A ewe or a doe has a short, wide urethra, and small stones go on through without anybody knowing it ever happened.

A male does not have that. The male urethra is long and narrow, and it has two places where it narrows further. The first is the sigmoid flexure, the S-shaped bend in the penis. The second is the urethral process, the thin worm-like extension at the very tip. That process is the narrowest point in the entire system, and it is where a great many blockages happen.

So a stone that a ewe lamb would have passed at some point in the night, without ever making a sound, is the thing that shuts a wether down.

Why it is wethers, and why show wethers especially

This is where the honest part starts, because show wethers are not unlucky. We build them this way.

Castration is the first piece, and it is the one nobody talks about. Testosterone is what drives the urethra to grow to full diameter. Castrate a male early and the urethra never opens up the way it would have. He spends the rest of his life with a smaller pipe than nature was going to give him. That is not an argument against castration, obviously. It is an argument for knowing what it costs and for talking with your veterinarian about the latest age your program and your show rules will actually allow.

The ration is the second piece. Grain is high in phosphorus and low in calcium. A show ration is mostly grain. When phosphorus runs well ahead of calcium and the urine sits alkaline, which is where a ruminant’s urine normally sits, you get the conditions where phosphate stones form. We feed for muscle and cover and finish, and the mineral profile that gets us there is the same profile that builds stones.

Water is the third piece, and it is the biggest one. Everything above still needs concentrated urine to become a problem. Dilute urine carries minerals out. Concentrated urine drops them. Anything that cuts water intake stacks the deck: cold weather, a water bucket he does not like, strange water at a jackpot, a hauling day, a heat event that put him off, a pen where the water is on the other side of a gate he does not want to walk through.

And the fourth piece is us. Show families are careful, invested people who add things. A mineral, a top dress, a supplement somebody recommended, another one for hair, another one for bloom. Every one of them well intended. Stack enough of them and the phosphorus and the magnesium in the total diet climb well past what anybody planned, because nobody adds up the whole stack. I will come back to this, because I sell supplements for a living and it is still the most common thing I see.

Put those four together and you have a castrated male on a grain ration, drinking less than he should, with more mineral going in than anybody has counted. That is not bad luck. That is a recipe.

What it looks like, and the mistake almost everybody makes

The mistake is constipation. It is such a natural read. He is stretched out, he is straining, he is pushing and nothing is coming. Every instinct says the problem is at the back end.

So people give a laxative and wait until morning. That is how animals are lost.

Here is what you are actually looking for:

  • Straining, over and over, with little or no urine. Sometimes a few drops. Sometimes a thin dribble instead of a stream. Sometimes nothing at all.
  • Tail flagging or twitching while he strains.
  • Vocalizing, and grinding his teeth. Teeth grinding in a small ruminant is pain, plainly. Take it seriously every time.
  • Restlessness. Up, down, up again. Stretching out. Standing with his back roached. Kicking at his belly or looking around at his flank.
  • Crystals on the hair at his sheath. Fine sandy grit, sometimes sparkly in the light, on the preputial hairs. This is one of the earliest things you can see and almost nobody knows to look for it.
  • Off feed, and dull. A wether who quit eating tonight is telling you something. If you are chasing an animal that has gone off feed and none of the usual reasons fit, this is on the list of things to rule out.   • Later, a swollen belly, or a soft fluid swelling under the skin of the belly.

The single most useful habit in this whole article: put your eyes on him urinating. You are out there twice a day already, morning and night. Know what his stream looks like when he is right. A family that knows his normal catches this on the first day. A family that does not catches it on the third.

The clock, and the trap in the middle of it

A complete blockage does not stay a blockage. The urine keeps being made and it has nowhere to go, so the pressure backs up. Often within a day or two, something gives. Either the bladder ruptures and urine goes into the abdomen, which is where the old name water belly comes from, or the urethra ruptures and urine goes under the skin of the belly.

Now here is the trap, and I want it stated plainly because it fools good people.

When something ruptures, the pressure comes off, and for a little while he looks better. He settles. He quits straining. He lies down quietly. A tired family at two in the morning sees that and goes to bed relieved.

He is not better. He is worse than he has ever been, and now the waste that urine was supposed to carry out of him is loading up inside him instead. A wether who is straining hard and then suddenly stops straining, without you seeing him pass a good stream of urine, is a more urgent call than he was an hour ago, not a less urgent one.

Passing urine is the only thing that means better. Nothing else does.

What to do tonight

Call your veterinarian. Now, not in the morning. Say the words “I think my wether is blocked.” Any small ruminant veterinarian knows exactly what that means and how fast it moves.

While you are waiting, some things not to do.

Do not give a laxative on the constipation theory. You will lose the hours.

Do not try to acidify your way out of it. This is the important one, because it is the advice that circulates hardest in the show groups. Somebody will tell you to drench ammonium chloride, or apple cider vinegar, or Fruit Fresh, or a citrus soda. I understand why that advice exists and I understand why it feels like doing something. Here is the problem with it. Acidifiers are prevention. They change the chemistry so stones are less likely to form over weeks. They do not dissolve a stone that is already wedged in the urethral process tonight. That is a mechanical problem, a piece of grit stuck in a narrow pipe, and chemistry is not going to move it in the time you have. Every hour spent drenching is an hour off the clock.

Do not give a diuretic hoping to flush it through. Pushing more urine at a blockage raises the pressure on a bladder that is already dangerously full. That is a veterinarian’s decision, not a barn decision.

Do not haul him a long way without calling first. Call, describe what you are seeing, and let your vet tell you where to go and how fast.

If he is passing some urine, even a poor stream, you may have a little more room than a completely blocked wether does. You still call tonight. Partial becomes complete without warning.

What your veterinarian will actually do

It helps to know, because it takes some of the fear out of the phone call.

The first and simplest move is usually to sedate him, extend the penis, and remove the urethral process, the thin extension at the tip. It is a quick procedure, and because the process is the narrowest point in the system, taking it off relieves a good share of blockages right there. He is a wether. He was never going to need it.

If that does not open him up, the stone is farther back, and the conversation gets bigger: attempts to flush the urethra, a solution infused into the bladder to help dissolve certain stone types, or surgery. Those options exist and your vet will walk you through them honestly, including cost, including odds, and including what a salvage surgery means for an animal you intended to show or harvest.

Two things worth understanding going in.

The prognosis is mostly a function of how early you called. Early is a short procedure and a wether who is fine. Late is surgery, or worse. Nothing else in this article moves the odds as much as the hour on the clock when you dial.

Anything he is given has a withdrawal time. If this animal is headed for a show or for harvest, ask that question out loud and write the answer down. It is not the first thing on your mind at midnight and it matters in the morning.

Prevention. This is where it is actually won.

Everything above is triage. This is the real work, and it is not complicated.

  1. Water, first and always. Clean, fresh, and in front of him every hour of every day. Warm it in the winter and keep it cool and shaded in the summer. Winter is the season this shows up, and the reason is that cold water suppresses intake right when the ration is heaviest. Two water sources are better than one. And know what his intake looks like normally, so you notice the day it drops.
  2. Salt in the ration, to make him drink. Loose salt worked into the feed, commonly at something like one to four percent of the ration depending on the program. Salt drives thirst, thirst drives water, water dilutes urine. Note that a salt block does not get this done for a lamb or a kid. They cannot work a block hard enough to matter.
  3. Get the calcium to phosphorus ratio right. The target most nutritionists work toward is about two parts calcium to one part phosphorus. A grain-heavy show ration will sit the wrong side of that on its own. Read your tag. If you cannot find the numbers on the tag, call the company and ask, and if they cannot tell you, that is its own answer.
  4. Ammonium chloride, if it belongs in your program. More on this in the next section, including the two things about it nobody tells you.
  5. Roughage, every single day. Good hay is not the enemy of a finished wether. It buffers the rumen, it keeps him functioning, and it dilutes the concentrate load that is driving the whole problem.
  6. Talk to your vet about castration timing. Later castration means a wider urethra. Your show rules and your program set the boundaries, but this is a real conversation with a real effect and most families have never had it.
  7. Check urine pH instead of assuming. Strips are a few dollars. See the next section.
  8. Put your eyes on him urinating, at every feeding. Twice a day, every day. It costs nothing and it is the whole early warning system.
  9. Add up your stack. Read on.

Urine pH: measure, do not assume

A ruminant on forage normally runs alkaline urine, somewhere around 7.5 to 8.5. Alkaline urine is where phosphate stones like to form. Acidify it and that chemistry gets much less favorable. The number most people work toward is under about 6.5.

You can check it yourself. pH strips cost almost nothing. Catch a free stream, mid-morning is a reasonable habit, and read the strip. Do it on the same schedule relative to feeding each time, because the number moves through the day.

I put this in because it changes the whole conversation from a belief into a measurement. Plenty of families feed an acidifier for months, take it completely on faith, and never once check whether it is doing anything. Some of them are protected. Some of them are not, and they would have known in thirty seconds.

The ammonium chloride conversation, honestly

Ammonium chloride is the standard urinary acidifier in sheep and goat rations, and it is in most commercial wether feeds for exactly this reason. Commonly it is used at somewhere around 0.5 to 1 percent of the total ration, which works out to roughly 7 to 10 grams a head a day for a lamb or a kid on a show ration. Your veterinarian or your nutritionist should set the number for your ration, not an article. And before you add any, read your feed tag, because if it is already in there you can stack yourself into a problem going the other direction.

Two things about it that almost nobody gets told.

One. It does not work on every kind of stone. Phosphate stones, the classic grain-ration stone, are the ones acidification targets. But calcium carbonate stones are a different animal, and they show up in goats on high-calcium forage like heavy alfalfa, and in some parts of the country more than others. Acidifying urine does much less for those. So if you are doing everything right and still having trouble, that is a real conversation to have with your vet, and having a stone actually identified is worth doing rather than guessing.

Two. It fades. The body adapts to a steady acid load and compensates, and the urine pH creeps back up over weeks even though nothing about the feeding changed. This is why some veterinarians pulse it, cycling it rather than feeding it flat forever, and it is the strongest single argument for owning pH strips. The feed tag tells you what went in. Only the strip tells you what is happening.

Now the part where I argue against my own industry

I sell supplements. Read that again before you read the next paragraph, because it is the reason this one is worth something.

The most common thing I see behind a wether with stones is not neglect. It is care. It is a family who loves this animal, who wants to do right by him, and who has been handed six different recommendations by six different people they trust. So there is a mineral, and a top dress for shape, and something for hair, and something a friend swears by, and the complete feed underneath all of it that was already balanced before anything got added.

Nobody adds up the total. Not the feed store, not the person who recommended each product, and usually not the family, because each individual thing seemed small. But phosphorus and magnesium accumulate across a stack, and the animal eats the total, not the label.

So before you add the next thing, take ten minutes and lay every tag out on the tailgate. Write down what is in each one. Look at the whole diet as one diet, which is how he experiences it. If you cannot make that add up, call us, or call your nutritionist, or call your vet, and have somebody look at the whole picture with you.

I will tell you where we sit in that stack, because it is a fair question to ask of anybody selling you something. True North products are balanced for calcium and phosphorus. That is a formulation decision, not a feature on one bag, and it means ours are not the ones quietly tipping your ratio the wrong direction while you are trying to fix it.

Now the honest limit on that, because I would rather you hear it from me. A balanced supplement does not repair a base ration that is already inverted. If the grain underneath everything is running phosphorus well ahead of calcium, feeding something balanced on top of it keeps you from making the problem worse. It does not make the problem better. The ration is still where this gets fixed.

On this problem, the answer is very often subtraction. I would rather tell you that than sell you a ninth bucket.

If he is straining and not passing urine, call your veterinarian tonight. Do not give a laxative, do not drench an acidifier hoping to dissolve it, do not give a diuretic. And know the trap: when he suddenly stops straining without passing a good stream, that is usually worse news, not better.

Prevention is water first, salt to drive drinking, calcium to phosphorus at about two to one, daily roughage, an acidifier if it belongs in your program, later castration if your program allows it, pH strips instead of faith, and your eyes on him urinating at every feeding.

And add up your whole supplement stack, because on this one the answer is often taking something out rather than putting something in.

How long can a blocked wether survive?

Not long. A completely blocked animal often ruptures the bladder or the urethra within about a day or two, and the outlook drops sharply from there. This is an emergency measured in hours. Call your veterinarian the night you see it, not the next morning.

My wether was straining and now he stopped. Is he better?

Only if you actually watched him pass a good stream of urine. If he quit straining without passing urine, the most likely explanation is that something ruptured and the pressure came off. He will look calmer and he is in more danger than he was. Call your veterinarian immediately.

Can I treat urinary calculi at home?

No. An animal that is already blocked needs a veterinarian, and usually needs a procedure. The home remedies that circulate in the show groups, drenching ammonium chloride, apple cider vinegar, Fruit Fresh, citrus soda, are all attempts to change urine chemistry. Chemistry is a prevention tool that works over weeks. It does not move a stone that is wedged in the urethra tonight, and the time spent trying is the time the animal needed.

Does ammonium chloride prevent urinary calculi?
