This is the first thing we ever made

Doc Farnum was feeding his own kids’ show lambs, and he was feeding the product everybody fed. Then one day he actually read the label and did the arithmetic.

It wanted two to four ounces a day, out of a two pound ration.

A lamb has thirty two ounces of room in a day. Four of them is one eighth of everything that lamb eats, given over to a supplement, in an animal you are already fighting to keep on feed.

He did not like the answer, so he went to the kitchen and built his own. It ran at nine grams a feeding.

That is still how we build it. Nothing in the bag that is not doing a job, and a dose sized to what the animal actually needs rather than to what looks generous in your hand.

It did not have a name yet. This is what it became, and it is the reason there is a company here at all.

The transitions are when you will be gladdest it is already in him: bringing new stock in, co-mingling, hauling, and the last weeks before a show when the stress stacks up and the appetite is the thing you cannot afford to lose. It works at those moments because it was already there before them.

What that means for the bag

A pig, a lamb or a goat runs about 132 days on one bag. That is most of a project. For small stock, one bag is close to one season.

A steer runs about 33 days, because he is eating four times the dose. Across a season that is four or five bags, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
