DAILY SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR SHOW PIGS
Why Skin and Hair Matter
A soft, hydrated hide and a shiny coat are more than cosmetic—judges equate healthy skin with overall animal wellness. Routine care also keeps pigs comfortable and reduces irritation.
Daily Cleaning
Keep pens clean and dry. Remove bedding often and spray down surfaces to minimise bacteria. Brush your pig several times a day using firm rice root brushes on light pigs and softer bristles on dark pigs to stimulate skin oils.
Washing & Conditioning
Limit shampooing to once a week; over‑washing strips natural oils and dries the hide. After rinsing, brush a non‑mineral oil conditioner into the hair to restore moisture. Use heavier conditioners three or four times a week when training long hair.
Tanning & Protection
For dark pigs, gradually build a tan using a combination of natural sunlight and safe heat lamps. Always apply sunscreen to white or sensitive areas to prevent sunburn. Avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the day.
Consistent grooming and thoughtful product use will keep your pig’s skin supple, hair thick and colour rich—qualities that catch a judge’s eye.
