The problem
Skin is not just a surface
There is a whole population of organisms living on your animal’s skin. That is normal, and it is supposed to be there.
When the balance among them is right, that population is part of what keeps the skin healthy and able to handle what the season throws at it. When that balance goes off, the skin gets vulnerable.
Anybody who has fought a skin problem through a summer knows what that looks like, and knows how much harder it is to get back than it was to lose.
Everything else on your grooming shelf works on the surface. This works on what is living on it.
We have written at length about two of the skin problems show families ask us about most often: cracked back and dippity pig syndrome in show pigs, and staph in show goats.
Before anything else
This bottle does two jobs, and they are not the same job
Most things in your barn do one thing. This one does two, and which one you get depends entirely on where you put it.
On the skin, it supports healthy skin and a healthy skin microbiome.
In the drinking water, it works on the gut, supporting villi height and crypt depth, which is what improves digestion and absorption.
Putting it in the water is not a back door to the skin. It is a different job.
We say that plainly because it would be easy to let you assume otherwise, and because people buy this for one of those reasons and then find out it does the other.
What it is
Esterified medium chain fatty acids, in an emulsified liquid
That emulsification is why the same liquid works in a sprayer, in a conditioner, and in a water line.
The label calls it what it is: a drinking water acidifier and a topical grooming aid for show livestock. Those are the two jobs, named on the bottle.
All ingredients meet FDA standards and are GRAS.
On the skin
As a grooming aid
What it does: it supports healthy skin and a healthy balance of the skin’s own microflora, the skin microbiome. That is the honest description of the mechanism and it is the one we stand behind.
Which is the whole point of using it. A conditioner softens what is already there. This one is working on the balance underneath it.
One ounce in a 32 ounce sprayer, filled with water. Or one ounce mixed into 32 ounces of your conditioner. Either one works, and plenty of people run it in the conditioner they already like.
Among the people who mix it with water, a lot of them add an ounce of chlorhexidine (the blue disinfectant) to the same bottle.
Apply it with a sprayer and let it air dry. It goes in fast and it is not greasy, which matters when you are working hair and not trying to fight a film.
In the water
The second job, and where the name comes from
Run through the drinking water, Provilli is not doing skin work. It is a water acidifier, and it is working on the gut.
Villi are the finger-like projections that line the small intestine. They are the surface that actually does the absorbing. More surface, more absorption. That is where the name on this bottle comes from.
In university research, Provilli in drinking water was shown to support intestinal villi height and crypt depth.
Use it when animals are stressed, hauled, co-mingled, or moved into a new place.
How to mix it
One stock solution, then pick your route
This is a concentrate. Dilute it before use. Undiluted product will cause irritation, so follow the mixing directions rather than reaching for the bottle straight.
Step one. Make a stock solution: three to six ounces per gallon of water.
Step two. Pick the route.
In the drinking water. Meter the stock at one gallon of stock per 128 gallons of drinking water.
As a drench, for the one that has already gone off. Stock solution at up to one ounce per hundred pounds of body weight. In metric that is 3 ml per 10 pounds.
Topical is separate
The topical does not come off the stock solution. It is one ounce in a 32 ounce sprayer of water, or one ounce into 32 ounces of conditioner.
What a bottle covers
Thirty-two ounces, and it goes further than it looks
One bottle makes five to ten gallons of stock solution, depending on whether you mix at six ounces or three.

Topical does not come off the stock. One ounce per 32 ounce sprayer or conditioner bottle, so 32 fills out of one bottle, about $3.37 each.
At three dollars and change per sprayer of finished product, the topical is one of the cheapest things on your grooming shelf per use. Most people do not work that out, because the number on the bottle is a hundred and seven dollars.

We had a 5-pound 3-day old piglet that we thought was a lost cause. This piglet was passing undigested milk had a big gut but was very skinny, which from my years of farrowing is almost always fatal at this young age. I believe the root cause of our symptoms were either Ecoli or Porcine Rotovirus even though our sow is vaccinated. I gave that piglet 1.5 cc’s of Provilli drench (mixed per the bottle) for three days and today you wouldn’t be able to tell that there were any problems at any time with the piglet. I have used provilli externally on cracked back but never internally in an animal. I believe Provilli saved that piglets life.
